Social Media and me
From the time I was able to sign up for social media at the age of 13, I've had multiple social media accounts. Facebook, instagram, and the likes all at my very young very dumb fingertips. I Felt untouchable because the internet is not real life right? Wrong. The internet is a scary place but social media is a different beast. The taglines for these sites are what's on your mind? Naturally people are going to spew their most genuine views on social media because of that. It’s by design. Social media is only intrusive if you let it be. As a preteen I let facebook and twitter into my every thought and into my daily life not thinking much of it. As I got older I started to realize people I haven't spoken to knew things about me that I've forgotten I divulged. That's where it became scary. At around 16 I stopped using social media as my journal and got an actual one. Since then my social media across all boards have consisted of memes that I find funny, statements I agree with, and the occasional selfie. So to say that social media is intrusive is taking some responsibility away from the user. Social media doesn't force you to say what's on your mind, you just do it. Speaking on responsibility I feel like everyone has a responsibility to keep everyone safe online. However, with the new influencer culture I feel like the responsibility is put more on those of that status than the others. If you have hundreds and thousands of people watching and copying your every move, you have to ,although reluctantly, act and coordinate yourself in a certain way. At the end of the day everyone is human but social media has created people that are held up on a pedestal. The least this person can do is be responsible with their new status. Knowing what I knew I decided to explore another side of social media where everyone is anonymous and I could speak freely. Stan Twitter. A stan is someone who is deeply ingrained in a celebrities life. They eat, breathe and sleep this celebrity. One of my favorite artists is Cardi B. so I decided to make a fan account dedicated to her. Boy was that a bad idea. I started my account around the time her and another big artist was feuding. It became a stan twitter war and I was not prepared for it at all. everyone throwing personal jabs all because two other people they don't know was fueling it was terrible I learned that people make excuses to be a bad person and liking a specific artist can be one of them. In the future I see social media taking a weird turn. With everything there is good and there is bad but with the way social media is being present now I feel it will be used to turn people against each other to benefit corrupt ideas.
